The Yard Theatre, London, UK

The Yard Theatre was established in 2011, in a disused warehouse in Hackney Wick, built by 50 volunteers over the course of eight weeks, with a £9,000 Arts Council England grant and recycled building materials.

Originally thought of as a temporary space, The Yard has grown substantially, whilst maintaining an exciting programme of theatre not found elsewhere in London. The Yard also runs an eclectic late-night music programme and runs two community centres in Hackney Wick and Stratford.

The existing theatre building is constructed on a mean-while site which now has planning permission for a mixed-use residential development. The landlords are providing a new plot as part of a Section 106 with the LLDC and The Yard having started design work on a new theatre and community centre.
